Kühne ends gherkin cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Hamburg, November 2023. Carl Kühne GmbH & Co KG is ending the cultivation of gherkins in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of the year 2023. The Kozarska Dubica location is to be closed in February 2024. The main reason for this decision is the decline in cultivation volume.
Kühne is discontinuing the growing of gherkins in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the end of the year. After several years of declining production volumes in the region, the company is taking this decision for economic reasons. The volume procured at the Kozarska Dubica site via contract cultivation accounts for a small amount of Kühne's total annual demand for cucumbers. In future, the company will balance out the raw materials from Bosnia and Herzegovina via other international locations. The Kozarska Dubica site will cease regular operations on 29 February 2024. "We are aware that the planned changes are very painful for the colleagues affected. However, they are necessary in order to maintain our competitiveness in a hotly contested and dynamic market and to future-proof our business," says Kai Boris Bendix, Chairman of the management board of Kühne GmbH & Co KG. A total of 30 jobs at the Kozarska Dubica site will be affected by the planned changes. The employees were informed about the project at an earlier point in time. Employee-friendly solutions will be created that go beyond the legal requirements. The contracts with the farmers are entered into annually and expire at the end of 2023. Kühne launched its activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015 with the aim of increasing the cultivation of cornichons to over 2,500 tons. However, cultivation has declined in recent years and is not sufficiently competitive compared to the company's international sourcing portfolio.
